Where do funds go?

All money raised goes back into our local community

BLUSH CARE PACKAGES

All patients, as soon as they begin treatment, receive a complementary Blush care package valued at over $100.

This package includes a dressing gown, slippers, pillow case, Blush mug, notepad, pen as well as useful (and appropriate) toiletries for the patient as they go through treatment.

In 2015 Blush was the beneficiary of the Heritage Bank annual golf day (a charity fundraising event) and was given $10,000. This was a significant contribution to the continuing Care Package project!

ADDITIONAL HOURS FOR
BREAST CARE NURSES

Blush Care Care co-funds the wages of the breast cancer nurses at St Andrew’s and St Vincent’s Hospitals.¬† The nurses have contact with approximately 200 newly diagnosed patients each year. Just as importantly, they maintain contact with those who have completed their acute treatment.

The importance of a Blush Nurse is invaluable, being able to provide expert and compassionate care to each breast cancer patient. The nurses help their patients navigate towards healthier lifestyles via education, practical and emotional support.

APPOINTMENT DIARY

The diaries help patients keep track of the many ongoing medical treatments and resulting appointments during their treatment. This is an invaluable resource for all patients, and their medical practitioners, as they make their way through the treatment phases.

This is provided to patients at no cost and is generously supported by St Vincent’s and St Andrew’s Hospitals in Toowoomba.

POST-OP BRA

All patients, as soon as they begin treatment, receive a complementary Blush care package valued at over $100. This package includes a dressing gown, slippers, pillow case, Blush mug, notepad, pen as well as useful (and appropriate) toiletries for the patient as they go through treatment.

In 2015 Blush was the beneficiary of the Heritage Bank annual golf day (a charity fundraising event) and was given $10,000. This was a significant contribution to the continuing Care Package project!

BLUSH IPADS

In March 2017 Blush was able to provide St Vincent’s and St Andrew’s Hospitals with 14 fully resourced iPads. They were loaded with useful information, videos, books and resource links for patients during their stay in hospital or as they undergo chemo or radiation treatments.

Thanks to a nomination from Barb Grey, our application to Aussie Cotton Framers Grow Communities program (for funding give fully resourced iPads) was successful! Funding for an additional nine iPads was raised at the 2016 Blush After Dark event.

We thank the following donors:

Sedl Agencies, Create Financial, The Bradford Clinic, Impressions on Scott, Robertson Scannell, The Podiatrist, Armstrong Auto Group, Angela Kelly and the Reinke, Pearson, Johnston, Mulholland and Hindmarsh families.

We also thank Nathan from Frontier Computing for kindly donating his time and expertise to making sure these iPads were fully operational and loaded with all our resources.

WELLNESS BREAKFASTS

Blush holds it’s wellness breakfasts three times a year at no cost to the participants. We invite patients, either in acute treatment or in their recovery phase, and their support people to enjoy light exercise and a healthy breakfast – but more importantly, the support of a welcoming group environment. The programme was initiated by the enormous generosity of the ANZ bank.

Breast cancer treatment continues to have various immediate and long term side effects and many patients, post diagnosis, find it very difficult to return to exercise and general good health. This is important for patients in order to improve their general well being, both physically and mentally, and to decrease the risk of recurrence or new disease.

With thanks to catering by the Sauce Kitchen and volunteers from the following exercise groups: The Shed, Zenon Fitness, Zama Yoga, Bridge to Health, Rebecca K Fitness and complete body, the participatns share in a wonderful morning with very positive results.

FIGHT BACK WITH FITNESS

In conjunction with The Fit Lab Health & Fitness and QLD X-Ray, Blush co-funds 12 ladies in a 10 week program to enhance their recovery from breast cancer!

They attend three times a week for an hour under the care of trained exercise physiologists with a special interest in exercise post cancer. We are hoping to facilitate over 100 women through the program over the next two years.

Designed for women diagnosed with breast cancer, regular exercise during and following treatment has shown to improve both physical and emotional health and the overall quality of life.

Traditionally, cancer patients were advised to rest and avoid activity as there were concerns regarding a risk of fracture due to bone mineral density changes and potential suppression response of the immune system. However current recommendations suggest patients should be as physically active as their abilities and conditions allow. As recent research indicates that regular exercise helps to manage some of the physical side effects of breast cancer treatment, such as fatigue, plain, lymphedema and lowered bone density. It also showed exercise in cancer patients helps reduce the risk of reoccurence and therefore, increased the survival rates.

The Program Stucture
The Fight Back With Fitness Program provides 12 people with the opportunity to participate in three (3) group sessions per week for 10 weeks. The Fit Lab’s qualified Exercise Oncology Trainers are with the patients every step of the way and patients are encouraged to work at their own pace.

The program commences with a quick and easy assessment along with a screening tool to customise the program to cater for each patient’s needs.

Elements of the program include: functional performance measures (walking, walking backwards and balance exercises), Cardiovascular exercise (can be ‘continuous’ or ‘intermittent’ depending on heart/lung functions), muscle strength exercises (chest press, seated row, chair squat, leg press etc) and calculated impact training (stepping, skipping and hopping).

This program has been extremely well received by patients who have previously completed this program

“what an amazing program this is for ladies who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. I have in the past not enjoyed going to a gym however, this is completely different to anything else I have experienced”

MEDICAL FORUMS

The forums, which have run four years in a row, have local and visiting speakers and trade displays. The local breast cancer support personnel are also available throughout the day for access by current patients. The main focus of the forum is wellness in going forward post breast cancer diagnosis and what you can do to change your outcome.

In previous years, we were proud to partner with the Prostate Foundation as the health and wellness aspects align with those of Blush Cancer Care.

We have been able, due to the generosity of speakers and sponsors, been able to present this to our patients free of charge!
